Tips for Warm Temperatures


We still have a few more months of summer

Rising temperatures often lead to increased water usage. The average family’s water bill goes up from 25 to 50% during these warmer months. Here are some tips from Dixon’s plumbing pro’s to help:

1. Turn down your water heater to 120 F while on vacation. It can lower your utility bills while you are away.

2. Turn UP your temperature of your refrigerator while you are away. Of course be sure to remove all perishable foods.

3. Know what goes down your disposal. Be very wary of fibrous foods… examples of this are celery and banana peels. You should also avoid fats and cooking oils, these can easily clog pipes. Eggshells and cornhusks are also known to be very bad for your disposal so don’t let them go down the drain. If one of these troublesome items some how gets buy run your cold water for 10 to 15 seconds at full pressure, many times this can help.

4. Eliminating standing water in your yard can eliminate annoying insect bites and can help get rid of disease-bearing insects.

6. Store your hose with the nozzle pointed down and disconnect it when not in use. It helps keep your hose bib in better condition and your hose too.

7. Tend to your trees. Tree growth is causes roots to expand and they can make their way in your sewer line in search of water. Sewage backups are often the cause of a tree and their roots.

8. Water heaters typically last less than 10 years. The last four digits of the serial number will show you the month and year it was manufacturer.

9. Outdoor adventures can mean more laundry. Know that the average rubber washing machine hose needs to be replace every three years or so, check for cracks and bulges regularly. (Also be sure to check your lint trap every time you use the dryer. And don’t leave your laundry unattended).

10. When you water your lawn can be a money saver. Dixon plumbers recommend early morning and evening when the sun is down as a great time to water.

11. Scheduling a preventative sewer line inspection especially after the rains of spring, can keep tree roots from ruining your sewer pipes.

12. Replacing some older faucets, showerheads, or toilets to the more efficient versions can help with saving on your water bill in the summer.

13. Annual plumbing maintenance inspections are a good proactive way to protect your plumbing system and help keep your pipes and drains in good working condition.
